Travel Wiz

Katoomba

Blue Mountains, NSW — two hours west of Sydney, about eight degrees colder than you packed for, and a far better two-night trip than a day trip.

Why Katoomba

Katoomba is a walking town pretending to be a driving one. It carries the headline view in the state, a proper main street, and an escarpment that changes character three times a day. Most visitors circle Echo Point, photograph the Three Sisters and leave — which is exactly why the cliff walks a few hundred metres further along stay quiet.

The trade-offs are honest ones: it is cold from May to September, weekends book out well ahead in autumn and through the winter festival, and the best walking is a short drive out of town rather than at the lookout everyone stops at. Midweek is materially cheaper and the lookouts are effectively yours.

Who it suits

Couples after two quiet nights
Families with a wet-weather plan
Caravanners and campers
Outdoor travellers who walk
Weekenders without a car
First-time Blue Mountains visitors

Where to stay

Sleep on the Katoomba Street side if you want dinner within walking distance, the Echo Point side if you want the escarpment at dawn, and Leura if you want quiet and a garden. Below is what suits which trip — not every property in town.

Katoomba Falls Tourist Park

Kui Parks member park, walking distance to Scenic World and the falls.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. You can walk to Scenic World, Katoomba Falls and the cliff walk without moving the car — rare for a caravan park anywhere. Powered sites, cabins, and the escarpment ten minutes away on foot.

Think twice if… Cold. Genuinely cold from May to September, and unpowered camping in that window is for the committed only.

Best for: Caravanners, families, outdoor travellers Katoomba Falls precinct, 2km from Katoomba Street

Staying here? Plan around it.

Scenic World and the falls are walkable, with fuel, groceries and food a few minutes away.

Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort & Spa

Heritage resort steps from Echo Point.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. The only property where you can walk to Echo Point in three minutes in a dressing gown's worth of effort. Gardens, fires, and a spa that earns the winter rate.

Think twice if… You are paying for the address and the lawn. Rooms in the older wing are smaller than the photographs suggest.

Best for: Couples, special occasions Echo Point precinct

The Carrington Hotel

Grand 1880s hotel at the top of Katoomba Street.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. Dinner, a bar and the station are all downstairs. If you came by train and want no car at all, this is the answer.

Think twice if… Heritage means thin walls and variable heating. Ask about the refurbished rooms specifically.

Best for: Train travellers, weekenders without a car Top of Katoomba Street, 200m from the station

Echoes Boutique Hotel & Restaurant

Small clifftop hotel with valley-facing rooms.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. Fourteen rooms on the escarpment edge — the valley view from the restaurant terrace is the best paid breakfast in town.

Think twice if… Small property, books out on weekends months ahead, and the valley-side rooms cost materially more than the others.

Best for: Couples, quiet weekends Echo Point precinct, next to Lilianfels

Fairmont Resort Blue Mountains

Large resort with pools, golf and family facilities.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. The wet-weather answer. Indoor pool, kids' club and enough inside it that a rained-out weekend still works.

Think twice if… It is a conference resort. If you came for intimacy or the village, stay in Katoomba instead.

Best for: Families, wet-weather trips Leura, 8 minutes east of Katoomba

Things to do

Ranked by what we'd actually do with the time, not by what pays. Where something is worth pre-booking we say so once; where it's free and better on foot, we say that too.

Scenic World

Cableway, railway and skyway across the Jamison Valley.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. The steepest passenger railway in the world is a two-minute ride that does more to explain the valley's scale than any lookout. The boardwalk at the bottom is the part most people skip and the part worth the ticket.

Think twice if… Peak school holidays turn the queues into the main event. Arrive before 10am or after 2.30pm, or go midweek.

Best for: Families, first-timers, anyone short on walking legs 5 minutes from Katoomba Street; walkable from Katoomba Falls Tourist Park

Prince Henry Cliff Walk

Clifftop walking track linking Katoomba and Leura lookouts.

Google

Why it stands out. Seven kilometres of escarpment edge with a lookout roughly every ten minutes, and almost no one on it past the first bend. The best free thing in the mountains.

Think twice if… Exposed in wind and slippery after rain. Not a pram track despite what the signage implies.

Best for: Walkers, photographers, second-day visitors Runs from Scenic World to Gordon Falls, Leura

Echo Point & Three Sisters

The headline lookout over the Jamison Valley.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. Free, unavoidable and genuinely good at dawn. Ten minutes further along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk you get the same view without the coach parties.

Think twice if… Midday is a car park with a view. Paid parking, no shade, and the photograph you get is the one everybody has.

Best for: Everyone, once Southern edge of town, 1.5km from the main street

Grand Canyon Track

Six-kilometre loop through a rainforest canyon.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. The best half-day walk in the mountains and it asks nothing but decent shoes. Ferns, dripping walls, and a canyon floor that stays cool in February.

Think twice if… A 12km drive from Katoomba and a genuine 3–4 hours. Closed after heavy rain and rockfall more often than people expect.

Best for: Fit walkers, outdoor travellers 20 minutes north of Katoomba via the Great Western Highway

Blue Mountains Adventure Company

Local abseiling, canyoning and climbing operator.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. Locally owned, small groups, and the guides actually live here. For first-time abseiling this beats the bus-based operators on ratio alone.

Think twice if… Weather-dependent and physically real. Canyoning in shoulder season is colder than the website photos imply.

Best for: Adventurous travellers, groups Katoomba town centre departure

High n Wild Mountain Adventures

Adventure operator running canyoning and abseiling day trips.

Google

Why it stands out. Useful when the other operators are full, and their half-day abseil is the cheapest genuine intro in town.

Think twice if… Mixed group sizes. Confirm the ratio before booking if you want hand-holding.

Best for: Budget adventure, half-day options Katoomba Street

Everglades House & Gardens

1930s modernist house and Sorensen garden, National Trust.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. A properly good cold-climate garden and almost never busy. The autumn colour here beats anything on the tourist trail.

Think twice if… Small. An hour, not an afternoon, unless you garden seriously.

Best for: Garden lovers, quiet mornings, autumn visits Leura, 6 minutes from Katoomba

Hydro Majestic Hotel

Art-deco hotel with a valley-edge tea room.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. High tea in the Wintergarden with the Megalong Valley falling away outside is the single most photogenic hour in the mountains, and you do not need to stay.

Think twice if… Expensive for what it is, and the drive back down the highway after is unlovely at dusk.

Best for: Couples, mothers, a rainy afternoon Medlow Bath, 8 minutes north-west of Katoomba

Katoomba Street precinct

The main street: cafés, bakeries, outdoors shops and pubs.

Google

Why it stands out. A genuinely good eating street for a town this size, and the outdoor shops carry cold-weather kit you will need if you underpacked.

Think twice if… Most kitchens stop early. Sunday nights in winter the town closes at eight.

Best for: Everyone, dinner and provisioning Between the station and Echo Point Road

Jenolan Caves

Limestone cave system west of the mountains.

Google
ATDW

Why it stands out. Spectacular, and unlike most cave systems the guided routes are genuinely varied. If you have a full day and a car, it is the best day trip out of Katoomba.

Think twice if… A committed 1h15 each way on a road that closes for works and weather. Check access before you commit the day.

Best for: Day-trippers with a car, families with older kids 75 minutes south-west of Katoomba
